What the research actually shows
This page exists because the krill oil category has an overclaiming problem. Below is our reading of the evidence for the specific things krill oil is sold on — including the places where the evidence is thinner than the marketing suggests.
Claim: krill oil is absorbed better than fish oil
Reasonably supported, magnitude disputed
This is the central claim, and it has real support — but less dramatic than the numbers you often see quoted.
The mechanism is sound. Triglycerides must be broken down by pancreatic lipase and reassembled before absorption. Phospholipids are handled differently and are inherently compatible with the watery environment of the gut, so they emulsify without the same bile-dependent processing. That difference is chemistry, not marketing.
Human trials comparing the two have generally found krill oil delivers equal or somewhat greater increases in blood and red-cell omega-3 per gram of EPA and DHA. Several found a modest advantage. Some found the two essentially equivalent once the actual EPA and DHA content was matched properly — which is the crux, because krill oil is less concentrated, so a poorly matched comparison can flatter either side.
Where we’d push back on our own category: figures like “up to 2× better absorbed” usually trace back to single small studies, sometimes with mismatched doses. We’ve removed that claim from this site. The defensible statement is that krill oil is a well-absorbed form of omega-3, at least as efficient per gram of EPA and DHA as fish oil.
Claim: krill oil has no fishy aftertaste or reflux
Reasonably supported
This one holds up reasonably well and is among the more reliable practical differences people report. The likely reasons are that phospholipid-bound oil doesn’t separate and float in the stomach the way triglyceride oil can, and that astaxanthin’s antioxidant activity reduces the oxidation products responsible for the taste. It’s a real quality-of-life difference, and it matters mostly because it’s the reason people abandon fish oil.
Claim: the astaxanthin delivers meaningful antioxidant benefit
Not supported at these doses
We’ll be direct: at the amounts naturally present in krill oil — measured in micrograms — astaxanthin is not present at the doses used in the studies showing systemic antioxidant effects, which use milligrams. Its real and valuable role here is protecting the oil from going rancid in the bottle. Claims about it doing more than that, at this dose, are not supported.
Claim: krill oil lowers cholesterol and triglycerides
Supported for triglycerides; weaker for cholesterol
The triglyceride-lowering effect of EPA and DHA is well established, and krill oil supplies EPA and DHA (see heart health). Some early krill oil trials also reported effects on LDL and HDL cholesterol, but those studies were small and results have not replicated consistently. Note also that supplement-level doses are far below the gram-level doses at which the clearest triglyceride effects are seen.
How to judge an omega-3 study
Four questions that separate a useful trial from a promotional one:
- Was the dose matched on EPA and DHA? If a krill oil arm and a fish oil arm got different amounts of the active fatty acids, the comparison tells you nothing about form.
- What was the baseline omega-3 status? In a population already replete, almost nothing will show an effect.
- How long did it run? Membrane composition takes two to three months to shift. Short trials measure the wrong thing.
- Who funded it, and was it pre-registered? Industry funding doesn’t invalidate a study, but combined with a small sample and no pre-registration it warrants more caution.
Our position
Krill oil is a good way to get EPA and DHA, in a form the body handles efficiently, without the aftertaste that stops people taking fish oil. It is more expensive per gram of omega-3 than fish oil, and for someone who tolerates fish oil fine and wants maximum EPA and DHA per pound, fish oil is the rational choice. We’d rather you knew that.
